I used to consider this term offensive.

You know, I used to consider the term "gringo" offensive to my kind (I'm a white United States citizen).

But now, I realize that's just what Latinos call people from The United States.

Or in Brazil, people from any different country, even the ones that are part of Latin America.

What did you think it meant?

It just means "foreigner". Like with so many other things to do with language, it is the 'tone' that makes the music. More often than not, what people say and 'how' they say it will tell you a lot more about 'them' than what they are actually trying to talk about in this regard.

I'm not a native speaker of either Spanish or Portuguese, but where I come from, the equivalent term usually tells me that the talker needs to expand their horizon and/or has limited experience with recognizing international facial features.
And of course 'some' people will use this term even for people who speak the local language fluently and could be living here in the third generation for all they know...

Either way, you cannot debate that it's factual. 'Everyone' is a foreigner, except in their own country.
